Sometimes it can be very soothing to read with or to, other people – whether they be your partner, a friend or friends, a child or children.

To voice the words out loud can bring clarity and understanding of the piece – a poem, part of a story, newspaper article etc. – together with the shared experience of collaboration and comprehension. To achieve this in a group of people who can gain from open discussion of their problems can be incredibly helpful.

Reading for Wellbeing works in this way – a group of people come together with a facilitator who selects a short poem or story, which is relevant to the group, either as a subject or their experience or even their backgrounds.

The piece is read aloud and interspersed with reading and reflection and group discussions. To increase engagement in the activity the group is encouraged to write about their own experience in connection with the piece. All this helps people to open up and discuss difficult issues in a distanced manner, focusing on the text.

Hopefully, the trust and confidence in the group develops and members can achieve a sense of belonging and achievement which enables them to become a support group – with a difference.
